Abstract
Methanol, opt. mixed with water, is reacted in vapour phase on a catalyst contg. >=1 element of Group VIII, including the noble metals. Mixts. of methanol, water and hydrocarbons may be used, the same catalysts being suitable for low-temp. cracking of hydrocarbons to methane. The mixts. are pref. preheated to 250-400 degrees C and reacted on a catalyst contg. Ni and/or Co. The reaction to give methane-rich gases also contg. CO1CO2 and H2, which may be subsequently methenised, is exothermic and may be carried out in economic vertical ovens. Methanol made in areas where natural gas is plentiful may be transported and converted into a natural gas substitute.
