Abstract

1388357 Methane rich gas METALLGESELLSCHAFT AG 6 March 1973 [16 March 1972] 10844/73 Heading C5E A methane rich gas is made by (a) producing a primary gas by the pressure-gasification of coal with steam and oxygen, (b) dividing this gas into two streams, (c) converting the CO content of one of the stream with steams to CO 2 and washing out the CO 2 , (d) purifying the streams by removing catalyst poisons, (e) catalytically hydrogenating the converted stream from (c) in a lst methanation step to give a gas comprising H 2 , CH 4 and water vapour, (f) dividing the unconverted gas stream from (b) into at least two further streams, (g) cooling the product gas from (e) and subjecting it in admixture with the first one of the further gas streams from (f) to a second methanation step, (h) cooling the product from (g) and subjecting it in admixture with the next one of the further gas streams from (f) to a third methanation step, and (i) repeating step (h) in turn for the or each other further gas stream from (f), if any. The washing step in (d) is carried out using methanol as a physically acting solvent. The methanation catalyst contains Ni supported on ceramic.
