Abstract

1391034 Methane rich gas METALLGESELLSCHAFT AG 5 Feb 1973 5702/73 Heading C5E Methane-rich gas is made by (a) producing a primary gas by pressure gasification of coal, (b) catalytically converting a portion of the CO content of the primary gas with steam to CO 2 and H 2 , (c) washing the gas either before or after step (b) with a physically acting liquid absorption agent, e.g. methanol, to desulphurize the gas and to remove therefrom methanation catalyst poisons, (d) passing the resulting gas in contact with a methanation catalyst, e.g. the iron or platinum group elements on a ceramic support at an input temperature of at least 250‹ C., (e) recycling some of the product gas from step (d) and mixing with the gas to be contacted with the methanation catalyst, (f) washing the remainder of the product gas from step (e) e.g. with methanol to remove CO 2 therefrom; the amount of recycle gas from step (e) and the operation of steps (b) and (c) being such that, prior to contact with the catalyst the gas to be methanated has a molar ratio of H 2 / (3CO+4CO 2 ) less than 1, a CO 2 /CO ratio at least 4, a CO content not greater than 4% by vol. and a CO 2 content of 5 to 30% by volume.
