Abstract

A compressed fibre bale is located within an enclosed chamber having a mouth enclosed by a cover. The pressure in the chamber is increased to a predetermined level and then rapidly reduced in one direction, pref. by removal of the cover to allow the fibres to separate and to be orientated in this direction so that the fibres pass out of the mouth of the chamber and into e.g. a hopper or a porous sack attached around the mouth of the chamber. The cover may be a flap held in position by a latch; a flexible diaphragm which is ruptured at the predetermined pressure; or a flexible diaphragm which is blown out of the mouth of the chamber at the predetermined pressure; the device is simple and allows rapid opening of fibre bales.
