Abstract

4-Vinyl cyclohex-1-ene is oxidised by gradually adding it to 60-80% nitric acid at 50-70 degrees C, pref. 60 degrees C, followed by heating to >70 degrees C, pref. 90-100 degrees C to yield the prod. The nitric acid is in an amt. 10-25 mols/mol vinyl cyclohexene. An oxidation catalyst is pref. used, specif. ammonium metavanadate in quantity 1% as vanadium on the weight of vinyl cyclohexene. After concentration and separation of the butane tricarboxylic acid, the remaining soln. is pref. recycled.
