Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain high-purity terephthalic acid for direct polymerization, by the oxidation of p-tolualdehyde with molecular oxygen, in the presence of water and Mn, Ce, a bromine compound and a mineral acid in a specific proportional as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: p-Tolualdehyde is oxidized with molecular oxygen in the presence of water as a solvent, heavy metallic catalysts and a bromine compound. As the heavy metallic catalysts, Mn and Ce are used and the bromine compound is maintained at 0.5W12wt% based on the reaction solution as bromide ions, and the g- equivalent of the hydrogen ions of the mineral acid is maintained at 1W85% based on the total g-equivalent of hydrogen, Mn and Ce ions, and the total g-equivalent of hydrogen ions, Mn and Ce is maintained at 0.5W5 times that of g-equivalent of bormine ions.
