Abstract

Demineralised water, e.g. from a boiler, a nuclear reactor etc. is made alkaline to pH 7-7.5, filtered through a mixed bed into a chamber filled with Tl turnings. The thallium reacts with the dissolved oxygen and water to ferric TlOH, a strong electrolyte, the conductivity of which is a measure of the oxygen content of the water sample introduced. The alkali content suppresses the parallel reaction between Tl and water, improving the accuracy of measurement.
