Abstract

Impure gas (e.g. effluent gas) contg. SO2 is contacted with a liq. reaction medium contg. at least part of the H2S require for the reaction with SO2 to produce sulphur and an alkali(ne earth) metal carboxylate as catalyst. The H2S is added to the medium so as to obtain a molar ratio of H2S:SO2 approaching 2. Method gives increased S yield from small or large sources.
