Aq. solns. of phenols can be treated by reverse osmosis, without using high pH values, using a semi-permeable membrane formed from a sulphonated polyarylether having formula:- in which A, B and B1 are the same or different aromatic radicals, >=1 of which is substd. by -SO3H; Y and Y1 are the same or different radicals inert to sulphonation; Y2 and Y3 are the same or different electron accepting radicals; r, s, t and u are independently 0-4, at least one being 4; m and n are 0 or 1; R is a bond or a radical chosen from -CO-, -O-, -SO2-, or a divalent hydrocarbon radical.
