Abstract

Auxiliary agents for improving the mechanical props. esp dry and wet-strength, of paper, cardboard and other paper pulp prods. consist of bisulphite- and/or sulphite-modified melamine/HCHO condensates (I), prepd. by condensing (i) 1 mole melamine, opt. mixed with (ii) 1,4-8 moles HCHO or a corresp. molar amt. of an HCHO-yielding cpd. and (iii) 0.22-1 moles bisulphite and/or sulphite, or corresp. molar amt. of a (bi)sulphite-yielding cpd. Mol. ratio of HCHO: (bi)sulphite is 5-30 : 1, pref. 6-16:1. Reaction is continued to a degree of condensation corresp. to a viscosity of 4-400 mPa, measured at 20 degrees C in 20% aq. soln. (I) is pref. used in aq. compsns. contg. 1-25 wt.% (I), at pH 7.5-10, and may be applied to paper in concns. of 0.5-5, pref. 1-4 wt. % (calc. as solids w.r.t. dry paper compsn).
