Abstract

A cellulose substrate e.g. a paper web with improved wet-strength contains a heat-setting cationic resin which is the react. prod. of (A) an adduct of (1) a dihaloalkane X-CH2-(C(R)H2)n-CH2-X (where X is Cl, Br or I; R is H, OH or 1-4C alkyl; and n = 0 or 1) e.g. 1,3-dichloro-2-hydroxypropane; and (2) a polyalkylene polyamine H2N(CmH2mNH)pCmH2mNH2 (where m is 4-15; and p = 0 or 1) (e.g. 1,6-hexamethylene diamine); in molar ratio 0.5:1-0.95:1, and (B) an epihalohydrine (e.g. epichlorohydrine) in molar ratio 1.25-2.5 mol epihalohydrine/1 mol amine gp. in the adduct. The resin may be applied onto the substrate in water sol. state, or added to the cellulosic pulp before formation of the paper web, is rapid, and rel. small amts. of impregnant are sufficient to impart good wet-strength.
