Abstract

Carbon contg. ferrochrome, which contains small amts. of metals of gps. Ia - VIIa, Ib - IVb as impurities originating from the raw materials, e.g. chromite ore, flux, coke, scrap, is treated with a gas mixt. contg. a halogen pref. Cl2, and a sufficient amt. of H2 to prevent the formation and evapn. of polyatomic halides. The metal halides are removed from the melt by evapn., by the formation of a fused salt slag, or by dissolving in a synthetic salt bath.
