Abstract

Forming an active mass of negative iron on an electrically conducting support. The active mass is deposited from an electrolyte contg. ferrous ions and nitrate ions at a total pH 0.5-3 (pref. 1-2.8) and at a cathodic current density of 10-100 mA/cm2 (pref. is not>60, esp. 30 mA/cm2) giving as little H2 evolution as possible 1-20 wt.% Cu can be opt. deposited with the iron hydroxide by including a Cu salt in the electrolyte. Pref. a sulphur salt is contained in the charging soln. so that during the initial charging up period sulphur is introduced into the deposit.
