Abstract

Lubricant greases with a high pour point comprise (a) salts of a mixt. of acids and hydroxy acids in which the hydrocarbon skeleton has the same structure and the same no. of C atoms as the hydrocarbons normally present in lubricating raffinates and petroleum-derived lubricating base oils and (b) an appreciable amt. of heavy alcohols with a hydrocarbon skeleton analogous to that of the acids. The greases are pref. prepd. by (a) controlled oxidn. of an opt. dewaxed petroleum raffinate (3-35 cS at 100 degrees C) to form >=3 wt % of saponifiables, (b) saponification of the acids and esters in the product, and (c) opt. diluting with lubricating base oil and adding conventional additives.
