Title cpds. are of formula: (where n is 0 or 1, and R' is H when n is 0, and is H or CH3 when n is 1) together with their therapeutically acceptable salts. They may be prepd. by acetylating methyl 2-amino-biphenyl-4-carboxylates or 4-acetates, treating the acetyl derivs. with POCl3, hydrolysing the resulting methyl 6-methyl-phenanthridine-3-carboxylates or 3-acetates to the corresp. acids, and oxidising them with CrO3 to form the 6-phenanthridone acids.
