Abstract

1443725 Soldering SOC ANON DES USINES CHAUSSON 2 Aug 1973 [2 Aug 1972] 36837/73 Heading B3R [Also in Division F4] In a heat exchanger assembly comprising a plurality of spaced apart tubes 1 and corrugated fin strips 3 extending between tube end plates 2, the shouldered edge 15 of a header box 5 is received in a peripheral groove or channel 8 formed in the tube plate 2, the upper part 11a of the outer edge 11 of the groove thereafter being crimped over to bear against the shoulder 15 and thus urge the box downwardly into sealing contact with a layer 13 of soft deformable material, e.g. an elastomer, located in the bottom of the groove 8. The inside surfaces of the groove and header box are spaced from one another to define a small space 16 which can act as a container to collect any sediment inside the radiator during use. Each tube plate 2 comprises a multilayer construction and as shown comprises a sheet or layer 23 of brazing alloy, e.g. of aluminium - silicon, manganese - aluminium or manganese - aluminium - silicon alloy, sandwiched between a pair of sheets 2 1 and 2 2 of aluminium or aluminium alloy. The tubes 1, which are of aluminium can be plated on their outside surfaces with a coating 16 of the same material as sheet 2 3 . The tube ends are received in apertures in the tube plate 2; these apertures may have inclined edges (6, Fig. 4, not shown) which are provided with scratches (7). The header boxes 5, which are made of synthetic material, are added to the assembly after the tubes, fins, tube plates and side plates 17 have been brazed together in an oven under normal atmospheric conditions or in a neutral atmosphere or in a vacuum; the side plates 17 are each formed with U-shaped folds 17a to accommodate differential thermal expansion occurring during the brazing operation. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 5) the tube plate comprises only two sheets (2 1 and 3 3 ). and the tube receiving apertures are defined by upstanding collars or flanges (4 3 ).
