Abstract
Process comprises reacting a mixt. (a) or (b) as defined below, in the presence of 30-60% wt. of water (including water formed during reaction), bases on total mixt., and 5-25 wt.%, based on total phenols, of a non-ionic emulsifier contg. PVA and hydroxyethyle cellulose in the ratio 2.1-4 : 1, until a sample of the reaction mixt. has hardening time of 30 secs. - 10 mins. at 160 degrees C. (a) comprises a substd. monoohydroxy phenol (I), phenol (II) HCHO (generator) and either NH3 or a pri. or sec. amine, the total phenolic functionality of (I) + (II) based on HCHO, being 2.1-2.8, the molar ratio of HCHO to (I) + (II) being 1.0-1.4 : 1, and the molar ratio of the N-cpd. being 5-50% based on (I) and (II). (b) comprises a phenol of formula (where R1 and R2 are H or 1-5C alkyl, the gp. CR1R2-being o-or p-to OH) and opt. (I) and/or (II), HCHO (generator) and N-cpds. as above, the av. OH functionality being 2.1-2.8, based on HCHO, (III) being considered for calculation purposes as having a functionality, based on HCHO, or 2.5, per benzene ring contg. an OH gp., the molar ratio of HCHO to total benzene rings contg. OH gp. being 1.0-1.4 :1, (III) being considered as phenols in which HCHO is already copolymd. in the molar ratio 0.5:1, based on total benzene rings contg. OH gps. The dispersion is storage stable, and contains a smaller amt. of undesirable volatiles than prior art dispersions.
