Abstract

Water-soluble immunological adjuvant, which is more effective and safer than known mycobacterial prepns., consists of an oligomer contg. the same monomer units as the polymeric substances of the cell walls of mycobacteria, Nocardia cells and related microorganisms, namely (a) neutral sugars (esp. galactose and arabinose), (b) amino-sugars (esp. D-glucosamine and D-muraminic acid), (c) amino acids (esp. L- and D-alanine, D-glutamic acid and meso-alpha, epsilon-diaminopimelic acid), and opt. (d) lipoids in an amt. is not >5%. It is produced by cultivating a strain of Mycobacteria, Nocardia or related microorganisms, recovering cells from the culture, subjecting the cells or cell walls obtd. by disintegration of the cells to a treatment to remove the lipoids, treating the resulting material in aq. medium with a mucolytic enzyme, removing the resulting solid fraction, and recovering the soluble immunological adjuvant in the form of an aq. fraction.
