Abstract
1426918 Laminates STANDARD OIL CO 30 April 1973 [9 June 1972] 20425/73 Heading B5N [Also in Division H1] An electronically conducting, ionically insulating current collector or inter-cell connector for a capacitive device (see Division H1) comprises a layer of conductive carbon black loaded elastomer sandwiched between two flexible graphite layers. The graphite layers are each preferably 0À3 tp 10 mils. thick and may have anisotropic conductivity. The elastomer layer may be 2 to 10 mils. thick. The elastomer may be a natural or synthetic rubber, examples of the latter being disclosed, and may include promoters, e.g. nitroso-compounds, to increase its conductivity. The elastomer layer may be applied to one of the graphite layers, optionally as a solution, by calendering, silk screening, spray or brush coating. Alternatively a sheet of the elastomer, prepressed or calendered to desired thickness, is placed between the two graphite sheets. The laminate is consolidated by pressure prior to curing the elastomer by nuclear, ultra-violet or infra-red radiation, steam, hot air or vulcanizing. Comparative examples disclose a single graphite sheet laminated to the loaded elastomer, the latter having a smooth or a roughened surface.
