Abstract

Flame retardant, non-shrinking, open-celled polyurethane foams are made by reacting (i) polyethers contg. reactive H atoms with a mol. wt. of 750-10,000, (ii) polyisocyanates, (iii) water and/or org. blowing agents, (iv) in the presence of 0.1-25 pref. 0.20-5, wt.%, on (i) + (ii) of a siloxane R3-SiO- -Sri(R')(OS2R3)-O- a-SiR3 (where R is a 6C aliphatic residue, pref. methyl, and R' is a monovalent residue, pref. phenyl, and >=70 wt.% of the siloxane mixture has a=1 while siloxanes with a=0, a=2 and a=3 are present at is not >25 wt.%, is not >20 wt.% and is not >5 wt.% respectively on the mixture). Emulsifiers and catalysts such as tert. amines and/or silamines, opt. with organometallic cpds. such as dibutyltindilaurate, may also be present. The products are soft flexible form mouldings with good feel and cell structure, and having self-extinguishing props.
