Abstract

Ferronickel, esp. as extracted from ore is finely divided and dissolved in H2SO4 or other sulphate bearing solvent in >=2 steps, in the presence of alkali metal and an oxidant together with Cu as an oxidation catalyst so that the iron is pptd. as an alkali jarosite. Removal of the jarosite from the soln. leaves the Ni almost free of iron. Co and Cr can be readily removed in subsequent steps. Process is simple and more efficient than in prior art. It is free from technical snags and hence efficiency is simply a matter of economics.
