Abstract

Organo-tin mercaptides, consisting mainly of gps. of formula (in which X is 1-4C alkylene or phenylene, Y is a 2-10C aliphatic gp. or cycloaliphatic gp. with 1 or 2 C=C or C triple bond bonds; Y1 is 1-10C alkylene or cycloalkylene with 5 or 6C rings or phenyl alkyl with 1-4C alkyl, R1 and R2 are 1-10C alkyl gps) are made by reacting x mols of HS-X-COOH with a mixt. of y1 mols. HO-Y-OH, y2 mols HO-Y'-OH and y3 mols. ROH (in which R is 1-8C alkyl or alkenyl, cycloalkyl or cycloalkenyl with 5 or 6C rings or phenyl alkyl with 1-4C alkyl). The product is reacted with a mixt. of z1 mols diorgano-tin deriv. R1R2SnO or R1R2SnCl2 and z2 mols. mono-organo-tin derivs. (R1SnO1.5)n R1SnCl3, R1Sn(OH)Cl2 or R1Sn(OH)2Cl. in pref. processes z2 and y2 and/or y3 are O. They are suitable for use as stabilisers for PVC or other halogenated vinyl resins and reduce the yellowing effect on extrusion of thin-walled transparent tubing or calendering of thin film at high temps.
