Abstract

Mattress incorporates three principal components; a supporting base or shell, a cover enclosing all or part of the mattress and a space enclosed and filled with particles free to move w.r.t. each other. The shell may be made of an elastic or cellular material or an inflatable structure, may have its own subsidiary cover or skin. Pref. the cover can follow local displacement of the particles beneath, and is a jersey weave fabric or a cloth incorporating elastic yarns or a (cellular) plastics sheet. The particles are pref. of rubber or expanded polystyrene or cork. Suitable for beds or chairs for domestic or medical applications.
