Abstract

Refining materials are brought into contact with a liquid metal current so as to form in a refining vessel an emusion of metal-slag-gas which is removed by overflowing into a settling vessel. The refining materials are mainly composed of oxygen blown by a lance on the metal surface, opt. contg. solids, e.g. lime. The refining reactions take place at much increased velocity because of the highly-divided state of the reactants. Under the emulsion level are injected hydrocarbons and opt. oxygen so as to supply supplementary heat by oxidn., so that large quantities of coolant additives esp. scrap, may be added.
