Abstract

The black liquor is subjected to wet oxidn. in the liquid phase using pure O2 at 180-300 degrees C and 15-100 bar, in the presence of a catalyst. Specif. the catalyst is a transition metal having an incomplete d or f shell (pref. Fe or Cu) and is used as the metal, oxide of salt. Compared with atmos. oxidn. lower working pressures used giving reduced operational costs. The treated liquor also shows a three-fold improvement in biodegradability.
