Abstract

Alcohols are prepared by hydrating one or more olefins in the presence of an acid catalyst, e.g H2SO4, and in order to facilitate recovery of the alcohol from the aqs. reaction product, also in the presence of an inorganic salt sol. in the reaction medium, suitably Na2SO4 or NaHSO4, in an amt. such that the reaction product divides into two superposed liquid phases. The upper phase comprises most of the alcohol and water, the lower phase contains the acid and the water-sol. salt, the two phases are then separated and the alcohol recovered from the upper phase. Thus propylene may be dehydrated in the presence of 30% H2SO4, and NaHSO4, H2O to form isopropyl alcohol.
