Abstract

Hydroxyl derivs. are prepd. by molecular oxidn. of aliphatic, alicyclic or aromatic hydrocarbons using a transition metal catalyst with hydrazines (I) as co-reducers (at 5-60 degrees C). (I) are R1-NH-NH-R2 where R1, R2 are 1-20C (substd) alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkylaryl or sec. cyclic hydrazine where 0.001-1 mole/litre of a 1-10C carboxylic acid is added. Oxidised (I) is regenerated by catalytic reduction. Use of co-reducers gives excellent selectivity at low temp.
