Abstract

A calender roll assembly includes a vertical array of rollers through which a web passes and the lowermost roller is biassed upwardly against a stop by a lower hydraulic ram applying a first force. The upper most roller is biassed downwardly by an upper ram applying a second force and to the separate the rollers on web breakage hydraulic fluid is supplied to the upper ram to produce a third force is opposite to the second force, and only when the third force is sufficient to overcome the weight of the uppermost roller in the first force reduced to lower the lowermost roller. Pref. the third force is increased until the uppermost roller is raised. The arrangement allows rapid separation of the rollers to prevent damage and requires less expensive hydraulic control equipment.
