[Also in Division D2] A method of controlling the calendering pressure exerted on a web passing sequentially through a series of pressure nips provided by a plurality of superposed calender rolls in a single stack, comprises regulating the downwards load on an adjacent, lower roll by a controlled deflection roll located intermediate of the stack, by regulating the forces acting on the journals of the controlled roll, and controlling the fluid pressure in the roll. A second, controlled deflection roll may be provided below the intermediate roll in the stack, e.g. as the bottom roll. The controlled deflection rolls may be " swimming " rolls. The downwards forces acting on the journals of the controlled roll may be provided by fluid pressure means.
