Abstract
Initiator comprises at least one explosive charge contained in an envelope which is rigid but is destroyed on firing. In artillery of a high calibre the explosive charge is usually contained in powder-bags but with modern automatic weapons a rigid case is necessary; this involves the use of a complex ejection system with, in consequence, dead time in the firing sequence. In the new device the envelope for the charge can be made either in combustible, friable material, such as wood or cardboard, in a completely combustible plastic material or in an envelope made from an explosive with a plastic binder. The initiator is partic. useful for automatic weapons with a high rate of fire in which bare propellant charges are used to eliminate the need for an ejection system. The envelope itself may be made of an explosive material of the same chemical compsn as that of the explosive charge contained in the envelope.
