Abstract

Lyophilised collagen-based bandages with fine porosity, useful as temporary skin dressings, esp. in burns or accidents involving skin loss, partic. over large body areas, are obtd. by quick-freezing an ox leather collagen dispersion having a concn. of 0.66 - 2% at -65 to -70 degrees C for 2.5 - 3.2 hrs. and drying by vaccum sublimation under 10-3 to 10-5 Torr for 24 - 48 hrs., provide end temp. =35 degrees C. Bactericides and/or bacteriostatic materials, e.g. 1.5 - 2 g tetracyclin and/or 0.5 - 0.75 g. hydrocortisone, are pref. added to dispersion before freezing and sublimation.
