Abstract

The dil. black liquor is blown with 0.5-1 times the theoretical amt. of O2 required to convert its Na sulphide content to thiosulphate. After concentration the liquor is finally blown with O2 in a large excess of that required for complete oxidation of residual sulphide to thiosulphate. Conversions of 85-100% are achieved compared with 85% in prior processes, with minimal malodorous by products e.g. H2S and mercaptans which cause atmos. pollution.
