Abstract

Fibres which contain Si-O bonds are prepd. by spinning a soln. which contains an epoxyalkane polymer and the conversion prod. of is not 1 tetraalkoxysilane and/or alkoxypolysiloxane, is not 1 organoalkoxysilane and/or organoalkoxypolysiloxane and is not the amt. of water stoichiometrically needed for the complete hydrolysis of all the alkoxy gps. of the silanes and siloxanes; the amt. of the tetraalkoxysilane + alkoxypolysiloxane is 5-99 moles % of the silane + siloxane. The fibre contains Si-O bonds and some Si-C bonds. On heating the fibres, the Si-C and Si-OC bonds are partially broken, giving a quartz fibre, which may contain finely-divided C. The fibres are used in textiles, as reinforcing fibres and as insulating materials. The use of very high temps. is avoided.
