Abstract
Naphtha fractions contg. at least paraffins and naphthenes are passed with H2 over a naphthene dehydrogenating catalyst (pref. Pt on a heat-resistant oxide), and the product passed with H2 over a bimetallic catalyst contg. Pt with Ir, Rh or Ru or a carrier. The second catalyst pref. contains 0.01-2 wt.% Pt and 0.01-2 wt.% Ir, Rh or Ru (esp Ir) or a refractory oxide. The carriers are pref. alumina with inner surface area of 50-300m2/g. which may contain halogen. After the first catalyst, the product pref. contains =15 wt. % of naphthenes. The total conversion of naphthenes and paraffins, esp. into aromatics is increased, giving products of higher actane ratings than by use of Pt alone as catalyst.
