Abstract

Protective coatings for Nb (alloy) articles operating at high temps., e.g. turbine blades, flame inhibitors, heat-screens, rockets, supersonic aeroplanes, consist of intermetallic cpds. contg. (i) Si, Cr and Co or Ni and (ii) Nb, originating from substrate present throughout the whole thickness of coating. Pref. the sand-blasted articles are coated with a slurry contg. the powdered metal components, i.e. 50 - 80 (60) wt.% Si, 10 - 40 wt.% Cr and 10 - 40 wt.% Co or Ni, in a volatile org. solvent, esp. acetone, additionally contg. an org. binder leaving no residue on cracking, esp. nitrocellulose, dried, and heated in vacuo to 1300 - 1400 degrees C for 15 min. and then at 1150 - 1300 degrees C (Si-Cr-Co) or to 1250 - 1350 degrees C (Si-Cr-Ni). Pref. 2% B is added to metals, to improve a protective oxide coating on surface formed on subsequent oxidn. at 1400 degrees C.
