Abstract

Crucible lid of refractory material is made as a central flange with a coaxial, cylindrical boss on each side of the flange, the flange rests on the top edge of the crucible with one of the bosses fitting inside the mouth of the crucible. Since this lid can be used upside down as soon as the underneath is badly worn or damaged, the useful life of the lid is practically twice that of a normal one-way only lid. A coaxial hole may be formed through the bosses and flange to permit degassing of molten metal contents tending to splash up.
