Abstract
Polymsn. of ethylene is effected in the presence of a catalyst based on chromium oxide and silica at polymsn. temp. and pressure while determining the swelling ratio of the formed polyethylene and adjusting the activation temp. of the catalyst as a function of this ratio and/or controlling the rate at which hydrogen is introduced into the polymsn. zone as a function of this ratio in order to obtain a polyethylene having a desired swelling ratio. Gives linear high density polyethylene with a desired swelling ratio. This polyethylene is esp. suitable for use in blow moulding operations. The blow moulded articles have a uniform wall thickness.
