Abstract

An injection moulded thermoplastic foam components has a higher S.G. at its surface than in its core, its vol. divided by the unit area of the hopper exceeds 1,500cm, or the av. flow path length fromt eh holler divided by the component thickness exceeds 50, and the component surface is free from swirl marks near the hopper and/or shows pressure delay marks indicating a sudden change. The max. speed in the polymer flow is at its core, it therefore tends to move fastest at the centre of the mould cavity and to be deflected ast the cavity wall, where foaming gas tends to diffuse out of the mass. Restricting foaming by pressurising the cavity prevents this diffusion and therefore improves the product, esp. with thisk mouldings, and it also reduces mould face corrosion. The foam mouldings are of good quality with thick skin/total thickness (pref. 4-20 mm). The process has low cost process because of pressurised cavity and correctly selected injection speed.
