Abstract
Composite panels offering both thermal and acoustic insulation by combining a constant thickness rigid insulating material such as resin bound mineral or glass wool perforated with holes of various diameters with a further layer of unperforated insulation to form a self-supporting composite panel. The initial layer may be faced with adhesive coated paper pref. with sufficient extra width to form a wrapper for both layers of the composite panel. Composite structure may also incorporate vapour barriers of e.g. bituminised paper and/or surface layers of e.g. embossed aluminium foil to act as a reflector. Esp. for manufacture of stock sheet for cutting into panels for lining ceilings. Combines the acoustic absorbence of the perforated layer acting as a Helmholtz resonator with the thermal insulation of the unperforated layer. All components are relatively cheap and lightweight. Rigidity and constant thickness simplifies installation. Describes use of resin bound glass wool 10-20 mm. thick covered with Kraft paper and drilled with approx. 2500 holes/m2. varying in dia. from 3 to 8 mm. and then bonded with a second layer of wool 50 mm. thick.
