Abstract
Prodn. of hydroxycitronellal by adding water to hydroxycitronellal derivs. treated with a mineral acid, and neutralising the hydroxycitronellal deriv. with an alkal, is improved by reacting citronellal with ammonia or organic amine, and adding water to the reaction prods. in the presence of a mineral acid. The amines used may be alkylamines, alkanolamines or cyclic amines. The mineral acids are sulfuric acid, chloric acid and phosphoric acid, and water is added at 5-40 degrees C, pref. 10-30 degrees C for 1-5 mins. Hydroxycitronellal is useful as a perfume.
