Abstract

The alkali-metal bisulphide soln. is passed vertically down a tower contg. a series of floors each coated with alkali-metal bicarbonate, pref. as a crystalline sediment. Normally H2S and CO2 are produced and at equilibrium, the CO2 is in large excess. But evolution of H2S is much faster than CO2, so the dwell time at each stage is made so small that decomposition of bicarbonate to CO2 scarcely occurs, and H2S is pre-dominately produced. Steam is passed up the tower to reduce the partial pressure of H2S. The process is of special use in the paper-pulp industry yielding dry gas contg. 75 vol. % H2S.
