Abstract

A self hardening sand mixt. for mfr. of moulds and cores for foundry work is detailed. Additions of sodium silicate and sesquicarbonate in closely controlled ratios are made and dextrose (=1%) may be added to extend the time allowed for working before hardening starts. Mixts with ratios of total water : dry silicate 1.8-3.3 : 1, dry silicate - sodium sesquicarbonate 0.5-1.5 : 1 and sesquicarbonate : sand 0.21-0.03 : 1, using silicate of SiO2 : Na2O of average ratio 1.6 - 3.2 : 1 are found to give the best results. No gas hardening is required, but a coating of polyurethane on the mould patterns helps release of completed moulds which have excellent strength.
