Abstract

Colloidal dispersions of alkaline earth metal carbonates in a hydrocarbon medium, for use as lubricant additives, are prepd. by carbonation of an alkaline earth metal (pref. Ba or Ca) oxide or hydroxide in a hydrocarbon medium, pref. an oil with an initial b.p. of >250 degrees C (sic 250 degrees C is given in the body of the specification) and a viscosity of 10-55cS at 37.8 degrees C contg. at least one hydrocarbon-soluble surfactant (pref. an alkaline earth metal sulphonate of mol. wt. 450-550 formed in situ from the sulphonic acid), and opt. one or more organic promoters with at least one alcohol, phenol or amine function (pref. phenol or a 10-18c alkylphenol), by maintaining the medium at 120-190 degrees C and simultaneously injecting steam and CO2.
