Abstract
Calcium ions are removed for an aqs. soln of the resin by adding thereto a dilute alkaline soln. of a soluble acidic ammonium salt (I), having an anion which forms an insoluble salt with calcium in an amt. sufficient to bring the pH of the soln to >=7.0 by adding ammonia thereto. Treatment with I is usually for 10-30 min. The resin may be modified type, e.g. phenol-melamine-formaldehyde or phenol-dicyandiamide-formaldehyde-resin. The process is economical and provides resins which are not to diluted; they can be used for bonding together mineral wool fibres, e.g. glass fibres in the formation of fibrous insulation.
