Abstract

A catalyst for the decompsn. of oxides of N consists of a carrier contg. 3-20 wt. % active component of formula:- Nix(FeyCrz)Ot, (where x = 0.5-1.5, y + z = 1.5-3 y : (y + z) = 0.01-0.9 : 1 and t is <10). The catalyst is used to decompose oxides of N in gas mixts. also contg. is not <1 reducing gas, e.g. H2 or CO; the gas mixt. is esp. an exhaust gas from an Ic engine. The catalysts also catalyse the reaction of CO and hydrocarbons with steam, and the oxidn. of hydrocarbons and CO. The catalyst is active at relatively low temp., e.g. 200-350 degrees C. It has high initial activity, which decreases only slightly with time, and high selectivity for molecular N. The catalyst has good mechanical strength
