Abstract

Suitable micro-organisms are cultured in a nutrient medium contg a C and N source, inorganic salts and organic nutrients and the cells are then further cultured together with 5-hydroxyindole opt. mixed with serine. The micro-organisms used must form >=0.2 mg/ml of L-tryptophane in a test for enzymatic activity of the tryptophane in a test for enzymatic activity bacteria such a Corynebactrium Sp. No. 14001 (FERM-P No 1048), NRRL-B 5395), flavobacterium arborescens ATCC 4358 etc, yeats such as Candida, Saccharomyces, Hansenella, etc; anctinomycetes such as Nocardia or Streptomyces as well a moulds such as Penicillum or Aspergillus. Culturing pref. at pH 7-10 at 25-40 degrees C. L-5 HTP is an important metabolic intermediate for serotonin and is used e.g. in the treatment of depressions.
