Abstract

Coating compsns. are prepd. from polyurethane prepolymers, with isocyanate end gps., made by first reacting org. polyisocyanates with polyhydroxyl cpds., pref. bi- or tri-hydroxy polyols, polyethers or polyesters with a mean m.wt. 62-6000, to give an intermediate prepolymer, and then reacting this with a monohydroxy cpd. of m.wt. 200-6000. The wt. ratio of free isocyanate functions in the final prepolymer should be 2-10%, pref. about 6%. Artificial leathers are made by depositing a finishing varnish on a transfer support, such as a silicone-treated paper, coating the varnish film with the prepolymer and covering this with a textile support moistened with a hardener-catalyst for the prepolymer, and putting into a space contg. steam. A small amt. of water or porophore may be added to the prepolymer to cause a small amt. of expansion during hardening. The artificial leather obtd. has good flexibility and elasticity and is used in making clothing and automobile seats.
