Abstract

1,214,478. Cellular polyurethanes. DUNLOP CO. Ltd. 24 Oct., 1968 [1 November, 1967], No. 49611/67. Headings C3C and C3R. Cellular polyurethanes in which the cells are formed at least partially by the evolution of carbon dioxide resulting from the action of water with NCO groups are prepared by mixing finely divided particles of man-made calcium sulphate dihydrate having no dimension greater than 100 microns with an organic compound having isocyanate groups and with any other polyurethane-forming ingredients, and heating the mixture to a temperature at which the calcium sulphate dihydrate liberates water of crystallization. The polyurethane foam may be made by the " one-shot " or, more preferably, the " prepolymer " process. Suitably, the prepolymer is prepared from polyethylene adipate and an excess of a diisocyanate so that the resulting prepolymer has a softening point below 90‹ C. The calcium sulphate dihydrate may be mixed with the prepolymer alone, but is preferably predispersed with a liquid polyether and a texture control additive such as a sulphonated castor oil derivative and then mixed with the prepolymer. The polyether is preferably poly(propylene glycol) diol. The calcium sulphate dihydrate may be prepared by adding a stoichiometric amount of 2N sulphuric acid slowly to a 40% aqueous solution of calcium chloride, followed by washing the precipitate to neutrality and then drying. Conventional diisocyanates and if desired catalysts and cross-linking agents are added to the reaction mixture.
