Abstract
A method for precipitating suspended particles from a liquor, esp. for separating sludge from a liquid containing it, using a dosed flocculating agent, is carried out by removing samples at intervals from the liquor, containing flocculating agent, flowing into the separator, the quantity of flocculating agent dosed is reduced or increased according to whether the sample clarifies before or after a predetermined period of time, as the suspended particles sink. In a preferred apparatus, samples are removed at intervals from the incoming flow lines, into which flocculating agent has already been injected, the samples are tested by photo-sensitive devices for measuring their clarity in a sample vessel; depending upon whether a predetermined clarity level is reached before or after a predetermined time, a control circuit reduces or increases the dosing rate of flocculating agent.
