Abstract

Title cpds. of formula: (H3-nXn)C-CO2.M(CO)m(Rp(L)q r (I), where X is a halogen gp. contg. not 1 F-atoms; n is 1, 2 or o; M is Mo or W; R is H or an alkyl, alkenyl, aralkyl, aryl or cycloalkyl residue L is a Lewis base contg. not 1 ether and/or alcohol and/or ketone grouping; m is 1, 2, 3 or 4; p and q are 1 or 2; and r is a whole number, pref. 1 or 2), are prepd. by reacting a Mo or W carbonyl with a fluoroacetic acid ester in the presence of a Lewis base L, are useful as catalysts for stereospecific (co)polymsn. of unsatd. hydrocarbons. In particular (I) are useful in the prodn. of polybutadienes contg. high proportions of cis 1,4 and 1,2 units and practically no trans 1,4 units. New polymers prepd. by linear polymsn. of 1,3-butadiene with (I) have 55 - 85% vinyl 1,2 units, 45- 15% cis 1,4 units and 3% trans 1,4 units; a transition temp. into the glassy state between -25 and -80 degrees C; and an intrinsic viscosity (in toluene at 30 degrees C) of 1.0 dl/g.
